2001: Space Odyssey film notes
The film originally starts out focusing on a group of apes.
This could suggest that humanity is defined and separated by violence.
Russia vs. United States when it comes to the race to space
Key factor that Floyd met the Russian scientists was that during this time there was a race to space between Russia and the United states.
They go to the moon, but a loud ringing/screeching sound begins and then they are gone
Next scene: is David Bowman and Frank Poole on the Space Odyssey, they are the only humans fully conscious as the rest of the crew is currently in “hibernation”
They are doing an interview and explain that the other crew members are in hibernation to try and maintain enough materials to allow for Bowman and Poole to survive for their 18 month journey, and the other crew members would be awoken when they arrive at jupiter (this is when you first meet HAL)
HAL9000 was a super computer that was programmed into (basically) full control over the spacecraft
HAL9000 computers had no prior history of ever having any issues for control or any issues that would lead to suspicion for HAL having control over the ship
HAL = IBM (type of computer)
HAL expresses his concern for the mission to Bowman, he is afraid of the outcome and how the team will handle the mission
This was a very weird encounter, why did HAL express this concern? It is supposed to be a supercomputer. Why does it seem to have emotions such as worry?
The “100%” failure for the satellite was incorrect HAL had made a mistake
HAL is using deception to try and deceive Bowman and Poole into thinking that he is correct, Bowman and Poole are convinced that something is wrong with HAL and plan to possibly unplug him
Poole goes out to reattach the satellite and HAL kills him
HAL then kills all of the crew members that are in the pods (he has now killed 4 people)
HAL refuses to bring Bowman back in to the ship
Bowman basically has to break back into the ship to shut down HAL from the inside.
HAL keeps saying “i’m afraid” but he is actually not afraid he is programed to show some kind of empathetic ways in order to try and make the crew members more comfortable
HAL wanted to kill the crew members because he was programmed to make sure that the mission was completely completed with no failures and he found human error to be failures and wanted to eliminate those issues before they became bigger issues
Bowman tries to finish the mission by himself?
Goes through some kind of light show
At the end he sees himself as an older man (he sees his future)
We then see him lying on a bed as a old man
Then we see a baby
Future circle of life for humanity?
